Wednesday, May 13, 2:45 PM, Sunset 2 Room – Democratizing Spatial Analysis: AI-Powered Natural Language Queries for Public Works Data – Jason Wheatley and Anne Canoune
Public works departments routinely leverage vast amounts of spatial data, but accessing insights often requires GIS expertise that many staff lack. This talk introduces an AI-powered assistant that makes querying spatial data as simple as asking questions in plain English. Built with the AWS AI platform and PostGIS, this proof of concept enables non-technical staff to interact with spatial databases through natural language, supporting queries like “Which storm drains haven’t been inspected in two years?” or “Show me water-main breaks by neighborhood this quarter.” The system translates natural language into SQL and spatial queries, returning results such as maps, charts, or summaries based on user needs. We’ll explore system architecture, AI query translation, building knowledge bases, and applications in maintenance planning and public transparency. This demonstrates how AI bridges the gap between spatial data and decision-makers without requiring GIS expertise.
