Kleinfelder Climate Change Project Receives Engineering Excellence Award

CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts – Kleinfelder is pleased to announce that it will receive an Engineering Excellence Silver Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Massachusetts (ACEC/MA) for its innovative Disaster and Infrastructure Resiliency Plan developed for the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport). The award presentation will be made during the annual Engineering Excellence Awards gala on March 18, 2015, at the Royal Sonesta in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

The Disaster and Infrastructure Resiliency Plan provides a comprehensive view of climate resiliency at Logan International Airport and Massport’s maritime facilities in Boston.  Kleinfelder will receive the award for demonstrating the highest degree of merit, ingenuity, complexity and client satisfaction.

“Kleinfelder is pleased to have partnered with Massport on this strategic and innovative climate change project, which will also benefit Metropolitan Boston and the millions of travelers who use Logan International Airport every year,” says Lisa Dickson, Vice President of Sustainability at Kleinfelder. “It was exciting to be part of an effort aimed at preparing our nation’s infrastructure for a changing climate, and we look forward to implementing these strategies with Massport in Phase II of this work.”

To produce the award-winning plan, Kleinfelder’s team worked closely with academicians, climatologists, engineers, architects, and industry leaders to develop transparent and reproducible methods which translate the uncertainty of climate change into meaningful design criteria. The project team’s findings were then codified into a larger Design Guide, which provides specific resiliency efforts to undertake depending on various metrics, including depth of flooding, function of asset, and overall criticality of the asset to business continuity. The Design Guide also covers major renovations and new construction, providing flexibility to the designer while protecting assets by meeting the overall objectives of climate change resilience and considering cost and return on investment.

Kleinfelder’s climate change vulnerability and risk assessment services are already being utilized by organizations throughout the United States, including the City of Cambridge, the Army National Guard, and the District of Columbia. Developed with academic partners, the company’s climate services are an industry-leading method of defining, ranking, and prioritizing climate change risks across a variety of assets and systems, and developing practical, resilient planning and design solutions.

The project has also been designated as one of the finalists to represent ACEC/MA in the national competition sponsored by ACEC.
