Career Journey: Tyler Hartman

Some of us have always known what we wanted to be or pursue as a career. For others, like Kleinfelder Traffic Design Manager Tyler Hartman, PE, PTOE, RSP1, it comes to us unexpectedly – like sitting at a stoplight that is taking forever to change.

Rewind several years. Tyler says growing up, he truly did now know what he wanted to be.

“What I did know was I was good at math and science and loved playing with Legos,” he said. “I loved understanding how things worked (lost a few good toys this way), and I knew my thought process was different than others.

“My parents suggested something in STEM, so I had chosen to take drafting and design, and Introduction to Engineering. Between the two classes, I found myself loving the drafting aspects of engineering and the need to think outside the box to achieve the objective set by the teachers.”

Tyler’s journey to transportation engineering, specifically, came as he experienced the frustration of sitting at a stoplight that took forever to change.

“I chuckled and realized, I could be the solution to my everyday headache,” Tyler said of his frustration at the intersection. “I wouldn’t need to question things and why they’re done. I would be able to implement designs that would be safe and efficient for my community.”

In celebration of Engineers Week, Tyler authored a blog for the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE). Read his full article, “Being Part of the Solution: My Journey to Transportation Engineering,” here.
