Dick Wells and Dale Weaver attended the maiden voyage and ribbon cutting ceremony for CATS Blue Line Extension prior to the light-rail line opening to the public.

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina – The Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) Blue Line Extension opened to the public last week.  Prior to the light-rail line officially opening to the public Dick Wells and Dale Weaver attended the ribbon cutting ceremony and took a ride on the light-rail line during its maiden voyage.

The $1.1 billion Blue Line Extension is the largest infrastructure project in Charlotte’s history.  After nearly five years of construction, the Blue Line Extension developed 11 new stations and 9.3 miles of light-rail that runs from the 7th Street Station in the Center City area to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte campus.

Kleinfelder played a significant role in the construction of the CATS Blue Line Extension, providing engineering services for construction materials testing, quality assurance/quality control oversight, and special inspections (as the Special Inspection Firm of Record) for all 15 separate contracts that constructed the 9.3 miles of the double-track light-rail, 11 new stations, 3 parking garages, one new maintenance facility, and extensive renovations to an existing operations facility.

When commenting on Kleinfelder’s contributions to the project, Jorge Salazar, Engineering Project Manager for Charlotte Area Transit System, said “This team has been dependable, efficient, and with a thorough knowledge of the work that is being performed.  I have seen this team resolve conflicts and handle other difficult situations with remarkable patience and admirable tact.”

Kleinfelder’s service on the project began in July of 2013 and is expected to continue through summer of 2018.  Kleinfelder had about 20 fulltime staff (inspectors, technicians, and construction managers) on the project at its peak.

“I am extremely proud of each team member that helped deliver this project to the City of Charlotte. Our field inspectors, testers, and managers maintained a strong focus on safety, quality, and professional communication, building a strong reputation with our client, other consultants, and the various contractors that has directly led to follow-up work. I am personally grateful to the Kleinfelder Charlotte office administrative staff for making me feel welcome during my relocation to Charlotte for this project, and for their constant, overachieving support throughout the project.”  (Dale Weaver, Program Manager)
