As part of Kleinfelder’s ongoing work for the Truckee Meadows Flood Control project, Kleinfelder assisted the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) with its preliminary design of flood control elements along the Truckee River to help protect the property and livelihoods of more than 350,000 Northern Nevada citizens.
Ten significant historical flood events have occurred in the Truckee Meadows area since 1928. The maximum flood recorded in January 2007 caused an estimated $500 million in damages. After decades of investigations, current studies support the development of a general re-evaluation report incorporating updated economic, engineering, and plan formulation, as well as preliminary engineering design. The USACE sought proposed flood mitigation elements including levees, flood walls, and terraces.
Kleinfelder’s work on this project involved a geotechnical exploration of subsurface conditions in support of future design of levee and flood wall features. Specific tasks included quality control and independent technical review, surveying, preparing an accident prevention plan, attending stakeholder meetings, creating a final work project plan and a subsurface exploration plan, review and cataloging of existing geotechnical data, permit coordination, coordination with landowners, cultural resources clearance, primary and secondary laboratory testing, and more.
Kleinfelder performed the work under a compressed schedule to meet the USACE’s schedule for submittal to Congress. The team’s ability to manage several concurrent tasks with the required technical expertise enabled the USACE to make key decisions in a timely manner.
