Five projects, which range from a pedestrian and bicycle bridge to a $110M clearwells improvement project, received the nine awards
May 17, 2021 (SAN DIEGO, California) – Kleinfelder, a leading engineering, design, construction management, and environmental professional services firm, received eleven industry awards recognizing the firm’s contribution to projects that enhance San Diego transportation and water infrastructure. The awarding organizations include the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) California, American Public Works Association (APWA) San Diego and Imperial Counties Chapter, and American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) San Diego Chapter.
Five projects, which range from a pedestrian and bicycle bridge to a $110M clearwells improvement project, received the nine awards which recognize excellence in design and management, technical innovation, environmental stewardship, and community impact.
The University of California, San Diego (UCSD) Mesa Housing Pedestrian and Bicycle Bridge received an ACEC Engineering Excellence Honor Award, APWA Project of the Year Award, and ASCE Outstanding Bridge Project Award and Project of the Year Award. Kleinfelder served as the prime design consultant for the bridge, which enhances UCSD campus access and connectivity. The project team was praised for their innovative use of spliced precast concrete girders in the bridge design and extensive analysis of construction sequencing during the design phase which helped overcome challenges related to crossing an environmentally sensitive canyon.
The Naval Base Coronado Coastal Campus (NBCCC) Sewer Force Main project involved design and execution of three miles of force main and modifications at two wastewater pump stations to connect the new $1 billion NBCCC to the City of Coronado’s collection system. Kleinfelder served as the prime consultant for this fast-track project, which was designed, permitted, bid, and built within an 18-month timeframe to meet the Navy’s schedule needs. In addition to providing wastewater disposal for NBCCC, the system will serve as a major source of water for the City of Coronado recycled water treatment plant. The project received an ACEC Engineering Excellence Merit Award, APWA Honor Award, and ASCE Wastewater Project Award of Excellence.
The Miramar Clearwells Improvement project received APWA’s Project of the Year Award in the Utilities Category. As the prime design consultant, Kleinfelder supported the City of San Diego with replacing the original 1959 facility, including two aging finished water storage reservoirs and the addition of a dual-train chlorine contact chamber, a 215 MGD low-lift pump station, a new operation and maintenance facility, new guard house and security system, an electrical building, and a 1 MW solar system – all with zero unplanned outages of service to over 600,000 customers.
Kleinfelder supported the $7M Torrey Meadows Overcrossing at State Route 56 project as a subconsultant to TY Lin, providing geotechnical engineering services for the design and construction of a new two-lane bridge to connect the divided community of Torrey Highlands, and to provide an alternate route across State Route 56. The project, which required extensive coordination within an area that was heavily trafficked by commuters, received an APWA Honor Award.
The SANDAG South Bay Bus Rapid Transit (SBBRT) project received APWA’s Project of the Year Award in the Transportation Category and ASCE’s Outstanding Transportation Project Award. Kleinfelder provided construction 
management services for multiple project segments of the $128M transit program for which Kimley-Horn & Associates served as the prime design consultant. The SBBRT will provide residents and visitors of San Diego with more frequent and reliable transit options, increase access in areas that previously had no transit options, and minimize overall traffic congestion.
