WARNERS BAY, Australia and CALIFORNIA, United States — Kleinfelder today announced that Peter Barton, formerly the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Yancoal Australia Ltd., has been named Principal Energy and Mining, effective immediately. In his new role, Barton will rely on 35 years of technical and leadership experience to advise clients operating in the energy and mining sectors on a wide array of topics, including environmental assessments, planning approvals, biological surveys and land management.
Kleinfelder is known in the architecture and engineering industry for its extensive environmental, permitting, siting and construction services. The company’s expertise is evident on several large projects in Australia and the United States, including mine rehabilitation and trail design for Macarthur Coal in Coppabella, Queensland and the $780 million expansion and modernization of Molycorp’s Mountain Pass Mine in California.

Throughout his career, Barton has worked in nearly every sector of the mining industry. His experience includes directing over 50 coal mining companies, managing 13 coal mines across three states, being a member of the Executive Committee of the New South Wales Minerals Council and chairing numerous joint ventures. He has also managed a multi-billion dollar development portfolio and has extensive experience negotiating at a senior level with government agencies, contractors, suppliers and consultants. Barton has also worked closely with Coal Seam Gas companies in New South Wales and Queensland to develop coordination agreements between overlapping mineral and petroleum leases, and has liaised with shareholders from a variety of cultural backgrounds to build the trust and business relationships necessary to deliver successful outcomes.
Barton received an MBA (Distinction) in Strategic Management from the University of Buckingham and a Diploma of Civil Engineering from Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education. He also possesses a Certificate of Competency to manage an Open Cut Coal Mine in New South Wales and a Certificate in Advanced Coal Processing.
