The awards celebrate projects that demonstrate exceptional engineering excellence at the national level, honoring the most innovative and impactful engineering endeavors of the year.

The Carlton Street Footbridge Restoration project was recognized as the APWA National Public Works Project of the Year in the category of Historical Restoration/Preservation.

The Kleinfelder team will study flood resilience for the historic wharf – one of Boston’s premier waterfront tourist and recreation destinations – to make it more resilient in higher tides.

Piers Park 2 included the construction and installation of a large central lawn area, a multi-generational exercise area, a children’s playground, a water play fountain, picnic groves, site furniture, irrigation and lighting systems, extensive landscape planting, underground utilities and drainage systems, and a 39-car public parking lot.

The challenge of this restoration project was to provide a universally accessible, ADA/MAAB-compliant bridge, which would accommodate bicycle traffic and furnish new surface lighting, constructed safely above an active Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) track within a nationally recognized historic landscape.

Kleinfelder created climate hazard models to inform vulnerability assessments, resiliency planning, and implementation. The integrated flood model accounts for the interactions of drainage systems, rivers, dams, and the ocean, providing a comprehensive picture of flood risks from extreme rainfall, sea level rise, and storm surge.

Kleinfelder led the design process to address the safety and operational issues of the complicated Inman Square intersection. The high volume of motorists, pedestrians, bicyclists, and transit riders caused safety and operational challenges, including multiple points of conflict between the different modes, and often lengthy delays for all users.
