Inman Square is a vibrant commercial and residential area located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, that is traversed daily by high volumes of motorists, pedestrians, bicyclists, and transit riders. Addressing a complex and dangerous intersection, the City of Cambridge sought to improve safety and transit operations, maximize the pedestrian plaza space, and provide necessary parking and loading functions.

Safety and Operational Issues

Kleinfelder led the design process to address the safety and operational issues of the complicated Inman Square intersection. The high volume of motorists, pedestrians, bicyclists, and transit riders caused safety and operational challenges, including multiple points of conflict between the different modes, and often lengthy delays for all users. The intersection is a documented crash “hot spot,” with a crash average exceeding the average rate for signalized intersections in Massachusetts. Kleinfelder’s design team faced challenges including the existing unusual geometry of the primary intersection with a high number of intersecting streets causing safety and operational challenges for all users, and maintaining emergency access to a fire station.

Design Improvements

Kleinfelder guided the City through an extensive public process while advancing the Square’s final design. Design improvements included the addition of separated bicycle lanes, protected intersection treatments and improved pedestrian facilities, roadway and sidewalk regrading in conformance with ADA requirements, floating bus stops, and a bus queue-jump lane.

The project also included the replacement of water main and drainage infrastructure, reconstruction of a City parking lot, reconstruction the pedestrian plaza space, installation of public art, and coordination with gas, telecom, and electric utilities.

Project Results

By prioritizing multi-modal transportation and incorporating sustainable design principles, Kleinfelder’s work in Inman Square exemplifies a commitment to creating inclusive and resilient communities.

Inman Square secured the fourth spot in PeopleForBikes’ list of the top 20 Best New U.S. Bike Lanes of 2023.
