
Dr. Zia Zafir Moderating Technical Session “Seismic Issues” at ASDSO Dam Safety 2018 Conference
Dr. Zia Zafir, PhD, PE, GE was selected to serve as the moderator for the technical session “Seismic Issues” at the Association of State Dam Safety Officials (ASDSO) Dam Safety 2018 Conference. The conference serves as a forum to learn from industry leaders, share innovative developments, and provide networking opportunities for nearly 1,000 dam and levee professionals. The Seismic Issues session will cover several topics including liquefaction potential of coarse-grained soil mixtures; seismic evaluation of Gatun Dam, Panama Canal; and seismic performance of levee segments on peat foundation soil.
With over 31 years of experience, Dr. Zafir is a nationally recognized expert in the field of seismic engineering. He specializes in probabilistic seismic hazard analysis, ground motions, site response, and seismic hazards such as liquefaction and lateral spreading. Dr. Zafir has provided his expertise on seismic hazard evaluations and seismic retrofit for renowned national and international projects. He has published/presented more than 40 technical papers in national and international journals and conferences and has been an invited speaker at universities and professional engineering associations across the U.S. Dr. Zafir leads Kleinfelder’s Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering Practice, chairs the ASCE Code committee, and serves on the editorial boards of Earthquake Spectra and Deep Foundations Institute Journals.
