SAN DIEGO, California (April 14, 2022) – The San Diego Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) recognized the Washwater Tank Seismic Improvements and Clearwell Seismic Improvements as the Outstanding Structural Engineering Project of 2022 and the Rose Creek Bikeway as the Outstanding Bikeways and Trails Project of 2022. The projects enhance San Diego infrastructure, increasing the reliability of the city’s water supply and improving mobility.
The Washwater Tank Seismic Improvements and Clearwell Seismic Improvements project involved design and construction of improvements to a Santa Fe Irrigation District washwater tank and clearwell, enhancing the ability of the reservoirs to withstand seismic events and improving reliability. CDM Smith served as the construction manager and Kleinfelder served as the prime design consultant, providing geotechnical investigation, structural design, electrical, instrumentation and control, mechanical engineering, and site civil engineering from study and design through construction. In addition to bringing the infrastructure into compliance with seismic regulatory requirements, the improvements will extend the service life of the assets.
As the structural design consultant to Nasland Engineering, Kleinfelder provided conceptual planning studies, final design, and construction support services for SANDAG’s Rose Creek Bikeway. Part of the Coastal Rail Trail, the bike path was designed as a 1.5-mile Class I bike path (completely separated from vehicle traffic) and connects existing sections of the Rose Canyon and Rose Creek bike paths. Built in a suspected fault rupture zone, Kleinfelder recommended an alternative design methodology for the 250-foot-long bicycle/utility bridge. Using simple bridge abutment modifications in lieu of extensive and time-consuming geotechnical studies reduced costs and accelerated the project schedule. The completed bike path fills a two-mile gap in the regional bike network and increases connectivity between key destination points to the north and south.
“These award-winning projects demonstrate the versatility of our engineers and their ability to provide sound solutions for infrastructure projects across diverse markets,” commented Kleinfelder San Diego Area Manager John Moossazadeh. “Our engineers take pride in supporting projects that enhance the local community, and it’s their commitment to quality and safety that has earned Kleinfelder the reputation as one of the top firms in San Diego.”
