Kleinfelder Makes its Mark as Leading Contributor in BSCES News

In the latest issue (February 2024) of BSCES News, Kleinfelder emerges as a leading contributor to both the organization and engineering community, with six Kleinfelder staff members authoring articles covering a diverse range of topics, from noteworthy projects to professional insights.

BSCES News is a member newsletter published by the Boston Society of Civil Engineers Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers and serves over 3,200 members across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Kleinfelder’s sponsorship of this issue underscores the company’s commitment to promoting knowledge exchange and professional development within the engineering field. Michael Cunningham, as President of BSCES, delivers a comprehensive President’s Report that acknowledges the success of the New England Regional Future City and Model Bridge Competitions, extending gratitude to sponsors, volunteers, and organizers. He also highlights upcoming events, encourages participation in award nominations, and recognizes notable articles authored by Kleinfelder staff.

Gus O’Leary’s article, “Over the River and Through the Levee: The York Street Pump Station and Connecticut River Crossing Project,” highlights the Springfield Water & Sewer Commission’s initiative to address Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) challenges through their Integrated Wastewater Plan. The $137.6 million project significantly reduces CSO frequency and volume, employing innovative engineering solutions such as the Construction Manager at Risk delivery method, slurry wall support, and microtunneling.

Kristen Ryan and Tyler Bernier discuss Kleinfelder’s involvement in upgrading the D’Angelis Water Treatment Facility in their article, “D’Angelis Water Treatment Facility PFAS Upgrades.” The project addresses elevated levels of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in drinking water wells in Millis, Massachusetts, ensuring compliance with current and future PFAS regulations and safeguarding public health.

Andre Martecchini‘s article, “Bridging the Past to the Present: The Story of the Carlton Street Footbridge,” recounts the restoration of a historic structure originally built in 1894 as part of Frederick Law Olmsted’s Emerald Necklace park system. Despite technical challenges, the project successfully restores the bridge to its original design, incorporating modern accessibility features and ensuring its longevity for future generations.

Rishabh Iyer, as BSCES Secretary, contributed a feature group article about the ASCE Environmental and Water Resources Institute (EWRI) Boston Chapter. The article highlights the organization’s mission to provide technical education and networking opportunities, along with discussing upcoming chapter events focused on industry knowledge sharing and professional development.
