Kleinfelder Receives Seven Awards from APWA San Diego and Imperial Counties Chapter

SAN DIEGO, CA – The American Public Works Association (APWA) San Diego and Imperial Counties Chapter has recognized Kleinfelder with awards for seven San Diego projects. The projects, which increase the reliability of water infrastructure and improve mobility via new roads and sidewalks, received APWA awards in recognition of their excellence and innovation.

As the primary design consultant for Santa Fe Irrigation District’s R.E. Badger Facility Upgrade, which received a Project of the Year Award, Kleinfelder supported expansion of the solids mechanical dewatering system at the R.E. Badger Water Filtration Plant, the seismic retrofit of the filter washwater tank and clearwell, and concrete refurbishment at the San Dieguito Dam. These improvements increased the long-term reliability of the plant’s infrastructure and achieved more cost-effective operations.

The City of Carlsbad’s El Camino Real Bridge Improvements at Cannon Road received a Project of the Year Award for enhancing local transportation infrastructure while protecting sensitive species. Kleinfelder served as the primary design consultant for this scenic corridor under California Coastal Commission jurisdiction that created multi-modal improvements for the community, including road widening, enhanced buffered bike lanes, bridge safety railing upgrades, major utilities undergrounding and landscaping, and a new pedestrian bridge spanning over the Agua Hedionda Creek.

The City of San Diego’s West Mission Bay Drive Bridge – one of the City’s largest transportation projects to date with a construction cost of $115M – received a Project of the Year Award for providing an improved transportation link across the San Diego River that alleviates traffic, enhances safety, and gives residents and visitors better access to major recreation and tourist attractions. As the prime consultant, Kleinfelder Construction Services provided construction management and inspection for two new parallel three-lane bridge structures, a Class 1 bike path and sidewalks on both bridges, and roadway widening and civil improvements along surrounding roads and freeway off-ramps.

As a subconsultant to Nasland Engineering, Kleinfelder provided geotechnical engineering services for the City of Coronado’s Ocean Boulevard Street and Sidewalk Improvement, which received a Project of the Year Award. By widening the existing sidewalk, relocating streetlights, and adding new street furniture, curb ramps, and bulb-outs, the project improved pedestrian safety and mobility and provides the community and visitors an enjoyable recreation area along the beach.

The City of San Diego’s Hotel Circle Accelerated CI & AC Replacement received an Honor Award. Kleinfelder served as the primary design consultant on this project, which replaced aging cast iron water mains and required fast-tracked design and construction when a leak was discovered on one of the pipeline segments. The project, which required a tunnel under Interstate-8 at Taylor Street and additional crossings within Caltrans bridges, proactively prevented the loss of water, a precious resource in Southern California, and increased the resiliency and reliability of San Diego’s water infrastructure.

Kleinfelder further contributed to the City’s program that mandates replacement of all aging and deteriorating cast iron water mains by providing structural design services as a subconsultant to Rick Engineering for the City of San Diego’s Pacific Beach Pipeline South, which received an Honor Award. The project, which achieves goals set forth in the City’s Climate Action Plan, replaced approximately 7.6 miles of water main and 1.6 miles of sewer main. Kleinfelder’s bridge engineering team designed the pipe support modifications for three major bridge crossings within the Mission Bay area.

Lastly, as the owner’s representative for the City of Encinitas Leucadia 101 Streetscape Project, Phase 1, Kleinfelder Construction Services provided project management during construction of infrastructure and landscape enhancements that improved traffic flow, addressed flooding issues, and created safer pathways of travel for pedestrians and cyclists. The project, which won an Honor Award, included wider sidewalks, dedicated bike lanes, landscaping, irrigation, streetlights, a storm drain system, parking pods, pedestrian trials, crosswalks, asphalt paving, traffic striping, street furniture, and a roundabout.

“We are honored to be recognized for our work on these award-winning infrastructure projects,” said Kleinfelder Area Manager Thomas Minter. “These projects serve as a testament to the expertise of our San Diego staff and their commitment to delivering sound solutions that achieve our clients’ objectives while enhancing the community through resilient, reliable, and safe infrastructure.”
