Kleinfelder Supports ASCE’s Young Leaders at 2020 WRYMC Conference

SAN FRANCISCO, California –  Last weekend, Kleinfelder attended and supported the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Regions 8 and 9 Multi-Regional Leadership Conference (MRLC) in Burlingame, California on multiple fronts.

The MRLC consists of three tracks to serve the wide array of membership and leadership groups within ASCE, including executives, national, regional, section, branch, and younger member groups throughout the West Coast. The Western Regional Younger Member Council (WRYMC) is one of three tracks within the MRLC that specifically focuses on younger members who are between the ages of 21 and 35.

The event was hosted by the combined efforts of the San Francisco and San Jose Younger Member Forums and included the WRYMC; the Workshop for Section, Branch and Institute Leaders; and the Workshop for Student Chapter Leaders.

In addition to supporting the event as a Platinum sponsor, Kleinfelder’s leadership played a key role in the weekend-long event.

On Saturday, January 25, Kleinfelder President and CEO, Louis Armstrong, gave the keynote speech, discussing the three components of a successful engineer – technical, management, and marketing/advocacy – as well as the Engineering Ecosystem, or the integration of engineering and business mindsets.

“Growing young leaders is an integral part of building and sustaining industry culture and growth,” said Armstrong.

WRYMC Co-Chair and Kleinfelder Project Manager, Gabriel Alcantar, said, “This year marks my fourth time attending this conference and, in those times, I haven’t seen a keynote speaker capable of connecting across all membership groups like Louis did – especially the students and younger members.”

Taking lead as WRYMC Co-Chair, Alcantar and his conference committee team helped fundraise and coordinate the weekend program for over 170 young professionals, including six project tours, Cal OSHA’s Safety Assessment Program, Diversity & Inclusion workshops, a Lunar New Year themed banquet and awards ceremony, and many other sessions on leadership and team building.

Alcantar was recognized for the integral role he played in planning the weekend-long event with an award for Outstanding Member in ASCE Activities. The awarding committee also applauded his dedication to serving the organization and his leadership of several other activities, fundraisers, and events throughout the year.

Kleinfelder Senior Vice President and Technical & Quality Director, Dan Harpstead, served as a judge for the Younger Member Awards.

With hundreds of Kleinfelder employees holding ASCE memberships and many serving in leadership positions at the local, state, and national level, Kleinfelder remains a strong supporter of ASCE and its mission to advance civil engineering. Conferences like the Multi-Regional Leadership Conference are an effective way of providing education and elevating current and future leaders that will make significant impacts within the industry.
