Kirsten Ryan presents at the 2017 Water Resources and Sustainability Symposium

DANVERS, Massachusetts—Kirsten Ryan teamed with Richard Rodgers from the Town of Danvers, MA (Kleinfelder client) to deliver a presentation at the 2017 Water Resources and Sustainability Symposium – “Planning for the Next Big Drought!” The presentation, titled “Ipswich River Basin Resiliency Planning: Drought, Data, & Perception,” discussed how the Town of Danvers, through a grant-funded study, is working with other groundwater suppliers in the Ipswich River Basin (Basin) to evaluate ways to improve water resources stewardship in the Basin.

The study, conducted by Kleinfelder, sought to answer several questions concerning the Basin water supply:

  • How is water being used in the Basin and are there opportunities for better management practices?
  • What physical and climatic constraints govern the Basin hydrology?
  • Is there enough water for municipal growth in balance with environmental needs?
  • What are some regional solutions to improve water supplier resiliency?

Municipal water, stormwater, and wastewater management practices were examined, and statistics compiled for water usage from 2009 through the drought of 2016. Basin water suppliers were also surveyed on their drought management strategies and enforcement practices.

During her presentation, Kirsten discussed the results of the study and potential regional solutions that will require regulators to engage with water suppliers creatively and collaboratively. A second round of grant funding is being sought to quantitatively evaluate the top ranked solutions.
