Teijin Automotive Manufacturing and Paint Plant Design

  • Teijin Automotive Manufacturing and Paint Plant Design

Teijin Automotive Technologies, a leader in the development and production of advanced composite automotive components, looked to expand its manufacturing presence and chose to build a new plant close to its existing location in Huntington Township, Indiana. Providing a variety of services, Kleinfelder partnered to integrate the client’s needs in the design of the facilities and surrounding access roads.

Turn-Key Solution

As part of this design-build project, Teijin sought a team that could provide a fully functional, turn-key solution to its process engineering group. This entailed completing design and construction of the facility ready for installation of Teijin’s equipment with no further modifications from the contractor. Kleinfelder worked closely with the project contractor, The Lathrop Company, drawing on both Kleinfelder and Lathrop’s long history of successful industrial facilities projects.

The new facility is a 165,000-square-foot complementary addition to the existing Huntington Township plant. Close proximity was an important factor for the client, helping to cut down on transportation costs and integrating seamlessly with the existing plant. The new facility also includes 12,000 square feet of office space and is designed to serve as a secure refuge during severe weather events. Kleinfelder participated in an accelerated design schedule concurrent with process engineering, and identified cost-saving opportunities for the design-build partner, process engineering group, and the owner.

In addition to traditional architecture and engineering design services, Kleinfelder actively coordinated with the City of Huntington to help ensure that the newly constructed industrial park road was aligned with Teijin’s needs.

Comprehensive Services

Kleinfelder’s multi-disciplinary team provided a variety of services, including:

  • Architectural engineering and design
  • Chemical and blast analysis
  • Code analysis
  • Construction administration and document design
  • Hazard code review
  • Interior design
  • Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering
  • Site/Civil design
  • Structural engineering
  • Topographic and boundary survey services

Project Results

Teijin’s new manufacturing and paint facility is expected to be complete, including all equipment installation, by December 2023, and will employ approximately 50 people when operations begin in June 2024, with 150 expected staff. Through close and careful coordination with all project partners, this project was delivered both on-time and within budget.
