Kleinfelder provided complete structural design for the $70 million North Regional Tertiary Treatment Plant (NRTTP) at the Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton (MCBCP). The final design for this 4 million-gallon-per-day (MGD) facility reduces impacts on highly sensitive ecological areas.

Complex Site and Aggessive Schedule

In addition to being on a seismically prone site, this Southern California area is an environmentally sensitive habitat, creating design and construction challenges. Kleinfelder needed to keep this in mind as it planned this massive, complex water treatment site. The project included a challenging top-heavy headworks building with a liquid containment basin on the upper floor and an underground-level buoyance uplift force in the equalization basin. An aggressive submittal schedule meant quick, clear thinking to design on time.

Addressing the Challenging Headworks Structure

With key experts leading the structural design team, Kleinfelder followed code to develop a successful treatment and subsequent reclamation process. The team addressed the challenging headworks structure with an aerated grit chamber to match structural limitations, and while using four sequencing batch reactor (SBR) treatment processes with high efficient blowers in optimal configuration to help reduce impacts on the surrounding environment. Once treated, the reclaimed wastewater can be used in irrigation.
