The Murphy Drive Pump Station Tank No. 1 is a 5.0 MG steel ground storage tank that contributes to water distribution to more than 6,200 households. The tank is one of four on the site located at 3521 Murphy Drive in Bedford, TX and was built in 1980 and was previously rehabilitated in 1999.

The Challenge

During a routine tank assessment, the Authority identified various concerns with the tank coating, structural stability, safety and security, operational elements, and the roof that needed rehabilitation in order to extend the life of the structure and enlisted KLF to perform the design for the first tank.

Our Solution

Kleinfelder prepared the preliminary engineering assessment report (PEAR) and final design documents for the 5 MG GST rehabilitation that included recommendations associated with the interior and exterior coating systems, site improvement, tank structural members repair and replacement, safety and security upgrades, roof water ponding repair, overflow pipe extension, handrail modification to be in compliance with the current regulatory requirements, and removal of cathodic protection system (CPS).

Project Results

Coating samples were collected to determine the presence of heavy metals. The scope also included Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling with FLOW3D for multiple mixing system considered for this GST. We prepared the bid documents and assisted the Authority during the bid phase. Our team also provided the construction administration services, and welding and coating inspection for this project.
