Kleinfelder Promotes Bridge Rehabilitation and Replacement Expert to National Bridge Director
SAN DIEGO, California – Kleinfelder, a global engineering, science, and design consulting firm, announced today the promotion of Nathan Johnson, PhD, PE, to director of its Bridge Service Line. Johnson, formerly a principal engineer and group leader in the company’s San Diego office, brings nearly two decades of bridge rehabilitation, replacement, and seismic design expertise to the role.
In his new position, Johnson will manage and provide technical oversight of Kleinfelder’s national Bridge Service Line, which focuses on bridge rehabilitation, replacement and bridge-centered transit design. The bridge design group’s services are available to clients nationwide, from San Diego to Boston.
“Kleinfelder is pleased and excited that Nathan is stepping into this role,” says Dan Harpstead, Kleinfelder’s Chief Technical Officer. “His extraordinary technical talents and ability to design innovative rehabilitation and replacement solutions will further enhance our ability to meet and exceed our client’s expectations. Under his leadership, we will flourish as a premier provider of bridge engineering services nationwide.”
A blend of expertise in funding, planning, technical design, project management, and construction allows the bridge team to deliver to clients from inception through completion. Johnson says “To complement our bridge expertise, we have integrated many of our company’s best geotechnical engineers. Combined, we have a proven approach to reduce what are often the highest costs and risks for transportation project owners and contractors.”
The bridge design team’s award-winning capabilities are illustrated with a variety of high-profile projects, including the North Torrey Pines Road Bridge rehabilitation in San Diego, California and the Norridgewock concrete tied arch replacement in Norridgewock, Maine. “These landmark structures on opposing ends of the country demonstrate the strong national need to fix our bridges, and our teams are ready to provide support,” adds Johnson.
Johnson earned his PhD at University of Nevada Reno studying seismic design of bridges and soil-foundation-structure interaction during earthquakes. He excels at developing constructible bridge structure-foundation solutions to address challenging site conditions and has extensive experience leading multi-discipline teams to complete preliminary engineering, environmental documentation, and design for bridges. He will sit in the company’s global headquarters in San Diego, California.
