PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania – Jeffrey Hale has been selected by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) to serve on an expert panel focused on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination in groundwater.
According to the Associate Director of ATSDR, Christopher M. Reh, Ph.D., “The purpose of the panel will be to review approaches and provide recommendations on the historical reconstruction of PFAS groundwater contamination at the Pease International Tradeport (Pease) site, a former U.S. Air Force Base (AFB) in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.” Jeff was selected to the Expert Panel based on his international leadership with PFAS issues, including fate and transport and his expertise in fractured rock hydrogeology. Notably, Jeff began his career in environmental remediation working at the former Pease AFB, including investigating the former fire training area, a suspected source area for PFAS associated with firefighting foam use. Jeff’s participation is fully funded by ATSDR.
ATSDR is a federal public health agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The agency protects communities from harmful health effects related to exposure to natural and man-made hazardous substances. ATSDR responds to environmental health emergencies; investigates emerging environmental health threats; conducts research on the health impacts of hazardous waste sites; and builds capabilities of and provides actionable guidance to state and local health partners.
