Kleinfelder Construction Services Honored with PROTOS Award by the Orange County Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America

The Kleinfelder Construction Services (KCS) Public Relations Team, working as the prime public outreach consultant for Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA), recently took home the top award at the Orange County Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (OCPRSA) 2025 PROTOS Awards Gala in Anaheim, California. The team was presented with a PROTOS Award in the Community Relations/Institutional Programs category for the Active Transportation Outreach and Engagement Support program, recognizing their significant impact on community safety and mobility.

Fostering a Culture of Shared Responsibility

The success of this comprehensive safety program is a direct result of its strategic alignment with OCTA’s mission to “Develop and deliver transportation solutions to enhance quality of life and keep Orange County Moving.” The program is part of OCTA’s overarching Active Transportation Plan and is funded through a Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) grant.

The core purpose of the program is to foster a culture of shared responsibility among residents, encouraging active transportation while empowering pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists with the knowledge and tools to safely share roadways and reduce collisions.

Mobilizing Safety: KCS’ Outreach Strategy

KCS works in close collaboration with schools, community-based organizations and City departments throughout Orange County to deliver a range of education, engagement and encouragement activities, including:

  • Planning and conducting bicycle and electric bicycle (e-bike) safety rodeos
  • Coordinating and staffing pop-up outreach and tabling events
  • Deploying mobile street teams at high-traffic locations to share safety education messaging
  • Providing essential safety incentives, such as helmets, helmet stickers, reflective keychains, spoke reflectors, and bike bells, to participants
  • Developing interactive modules that consist of engaging content like games and trivia questions

Commitment Reflected in Results

The talent and commitment of the KCS team have produced exceptional results. Their persistence has resulted in over 50 events in more than half of the cities throughout Orange County, providing education to more than 5,000 participants. The 2025 PRSA PROTOS Award is a high honor that truly reflects the team’s crucial work and dedication to supporting OCTA’s mission to keep Orange County moving. “KCS is thrilled to be recognized by our peers for another OCTA project,” said Deputy Project Manager Joey Fernandez. “Our team focuses on more than just construction and infrastructure. We remain dedicated to our communities by helping Orange County residents ride, walk and roll safely through free programs, fun events, and engaging safety activities.”
