APWA San Diego and Imperial Counties Chapter Honors Pershing Drive Bikeway with Outstanding Project of the Year Award
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (Oct. 1, 2025) – Kleinfelder, Inc., a leading multidisciplinary engineering firm, is proud to announce that the American Public Works Association (APWA) San Diego and Imperial Counties Chapter recognized the San Diego Association of Governments’ (SANDAG) Pershing Drive Bikeway as one of its Outstanding Chapter Projects of the Year.
Earlier this year, the Pershing Drive Bikeway received a local Project of the Year Award from the chapter. From those winners, six projects, including Pershing Drive Bikeway, were elevated to Outstanding Chapter Projects of the Year, the chapter’s highest honor, and recognized during the chapter’s gala at the Birch Aquarium on September 12. The event brought together more than 150 public works professionals, local leaders, and industry partners to celebrate achievements in infrastructure while raising funds to advance the chapter’s mission of supporting public works in the region.
Kleinfelder played a central role in the Pershing Drive Bikeway project, leading the design of the bridge and walls, providing geotechnical engineering, and supporting construction phase services. The 2.3-mile bikeway significantly improves connectivity and safety between Downtown San Diego and the North Park neighborhood. In addition to promoting biking as a safe alternative to driving, the project included landscape and drainage improvements that help mitigate frequent roadway flooding. A steel truss bridge and a 240-foot-long soldier pile wall are among the key features enhancing corridor safety and reliability.
“The Pershing Drive Bikeway is a vital part of San Diego’s infrastructure, and Kleinfelder is proud to contribute to its success,” said Kleinfelder Southern California Area Manager Thomas Minter. “Receiving the Outstanding Chapter Project of the Year Award highlights our team’s dedication and expertise in delivering infrastructure that is safe, resilient, and community focused.”
Echoing that sentiment, Kleinfelder Major Client Account Manager and APWA National President Vic Bianes emphasized the role of infrastructure in enhancing quality of life. “Infrastructure is the backbone of thriving communities,” he said. “Through thoughtful planning, innovative design, and resilient construction, we build bridges and bikeways that do more than move people; they connect lives, enhance safety, and elevate the quality of life for all.”
