KCS PR Team Celebrates Groundbreaking on I-5 Improvement Project

February 24, 2026

Improvements to one of Orange County’s most essential travel corridors is officially underway. To mark this significant milestone, the Kleinfelder Construction Services (KCS) Public Relations Team collaborated closely with Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) to plan and execute a high-profile groundbreaking ceremony for the I-5 Improvement Project (I-405 to SR-55).

Held on Friday, Jan. 23, 2026, the event signaled the start of a multi-year partnership with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) to improve nine miles of Interstate 5 through Irvine and Tustin, a corridor vital to the region’s economy and the 275,000+ motorists who rely on it daily.

A Cohesive Vision: Detail in Every Touchpoint

The KCS team, led by event coordinators Jessica Ochoa and Anthony Lopez, ensured that every element of the event was a purposeful reflection of the project’s identity and theme, “Building on Promises Made.” By carrying this vision through every touchpoint, the team created a professional and unified experience for all attendees.

Key highlights from the event included:

  • A Grand Entrance: Upon check-in, guests were ushered into the event space via a blue-carpet entrance framed by towering, manicured hedges. This intentional design choice established a professional tone from the moment guests arrived and served as a popular backdrop for early social engagement.
  • Thematic Continuity: The construction theme was woven into the environment through custom floral centerpieces that utilized black gravel to represent asphalt alongside miniature construction vehicles. This theme extended to the guest experience through branded gift bags featuring chocolate shovels, hard hats, and edible rocks, offering a playful and memorable takeaway.
  • Elevated Photo Opportunity: Moving beyond a standard dirt pile, KCS designed an elevated “shovel and dirt” experience featuring branded planter boxes and premium turf. This provided a professional backdrop for stakeholders and attendees to celebrate the start of construction.

Reflecting on the successful launch, project manager Anna Finlay shared her enthusiasm for the ongoing partnership:

“I’m incredibly proud of our team’s dedication and the strong collaboration with OCTA. As construction moves forward, we’re energized to continue supporting their mission to listen, engage, and connect with the community throughout construction.”

Beyond the Shovels: Public Awareness Campaign

With the groundbreaking complete, KCS is now transitioning to a long-term, comprehensive outreach strategy. As the project enters the active construction phase, the team will continue to serve as the vital link between the technical project and the public by managing:

  • Contractor Coordination: Attending technical meetings and translating complex construction data into clear, accessible language for the community.
  • Real-Time Community Outreach: Utilizing a mix of traditional and digital channels to keep the public informed of upcoming closures and detours.
  • Dedicated Inquiry Resolution: Providing direct support via the project helpline and email to ensure residents and commuters have a voice throughout the project’s duration.

By combining high-level event production with strategic communication, KCS has set a professional tone for the I-5 Improvement Project, ensuring the community remains informed as OCTA Builds on Promises Made.
