Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month is observed during the month of May and recognizes the contributions and influence of Asian Americans and Pacific Islander Americans to the history, culture, and achievements of the United States.

What is the AAPI Community?

The AAPI community includes cultures from the entire Asian continent—including East, Southeast, and South Asia—and the Pacific Islands of Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia. As of the 2020 U.S. Census, there were about 20.6 million people of Asian or Pacific Islander descent in the United States (making up about 7 percent of the population), and Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are the fastest growing group in the United States. Recognizing Ajay Sharma

We’re proud to spotlight Project Professional Ajay Sharma, from our Boston office, who shared how a recent trip to India served as a reminder of the importance of his and Kleinfelder’s work in water infrastructure.

“As an American with Indian heritage, I recently had the incredible opportunity to visit India for the second time in my life,” Ajay said. “This trip was not only a journey to my roots, but also a reminder of the importance of safe water practices— something we often take for granted here in the U.S.

“In India, ensuring the water is potable is a daily consideration. From avoiding raw foods to brushing teeth with bottled water, it highlighted the contrast in water infrastructure and safety standards. This experience reinforced my passion for the work that I do here at Kleinfelder, focusing on improving water infrastructure to ensure safe, clean water for all.”

Ajay said that, despite these challenges, his trip was filled with vibrant culture, beautiful sightseeing, and the joy of attending a friend’s wedding.

“It was an unforgettable experience that connected me more deeply to my heritage and my commitment to water safety and sustainability.”
