Kleinfelder Offers Engineers a Bright Future in the Field of Trenchless

Over the course of one year, Kleinfelder’s ranking on Trenchless Technology’s Top 50 Trenchless Engineering Firms rose from #30 in 2020 to #23 in 2021 – a noteworthy achievement considering the competition continues to increase as more and more AEC firms get involved in the trenchless field.

With an effective growth strategy and exciting project work, Kleinfelder offers engineers a bright future in the field of trenchless technology.

Opportunities for Civil and Geotechnical Engineers

As Kleinfelder’s presence within the trenchless industry continues to grow, the firm has looked both inward and outward to cultivate the skills needed to support projects.  New hires and currently employed civil and geotechnical engineers interested in broadening their career have the opportunity to complete Kleinfelder’s comprehensive training program that provides staff in-depth instruction and education on trenchless technology methods such as jack and bore, guided auger boring, pipe ramming, microtunneling, and horizontal directional drilling (HDD). Taught by Kleinfelder professionals who are regarded as leaders within the trenchless industry – Dennis Doherty, who was inducted into the NASTT Hall of Fame in 2022, Ken Sorensen, who has led the Kleinfelder practice since 2004, and Matthew Lockwood, who recently joined the firm – the training program has proven highly effective, with numerous employees completing the program and now contributing to Kleinfelder’s impressive portfolio of trenchless work.

In November, Kleinfelder held a two-day HDD Summit to hone the skills of trenchless engineers on the east coast.

“Since trenchless projects combine both geotechnical and civil engineering, many engineers already have the basic skill sets required for trenchless projects,” explained Ken. “By supplementing their existing knowledge through our specialized training program, we’re able to offer civil and geotechnical engineers more variety in their role and a more diverse portfolio of interesting projects to work on.”

Projects That Inspire and Encourage Creativity

Whether they’re installing miles of gas distribution pipeline under environmentally sensitive areas, replacing electrical power cables under large bodies of water, or installing new or rehabilitating existing wastewater conveyance pipelines  under active transportation infrastructure in highly urbanized areas, Kleinfelder’s trenchless experts are confronted with unique challenges that require creativity and out-of-the-box thinking to deliver cost-effective solutions that consider risk and how to minimize impacts to the environment, community, and surrounding infrastructure.

“Our goal is to continue providing our engineers with interesting work that they’re excited about,” commented Dennis. “Fortunately, we’re at a point where we can leverage Kleinfelder’s reputation in the trenchless industry and be selective about the projects we choose to work on – we’re targeting the best and focusing on solving high-end problems while maintaining and improving our current client base.”
