Business 40 Reconstruction Project Named DBIA SE Project of the Year and AASHTO Grand Prize Winner
Kleinfelder served as the Geotechnical Engineer of Record for the project, which was named Project of the Year and Grand Prize Winner by DBIA Southeast and AASHTO, respectively
GREENSBORO, North Carolina (November 2, 2021) – The Southeast Chapter of the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) recognized the Business 40 Reconstruction Project in Winston-Salem, North Carolina as the Project of the Year at its 21st annual awards ceremony. The project was also named the Grand Prize winner in the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) 2021 America’s Transportation Awards.
Completed in late 2020, the $99 million NCDOT Business 40 Reconstruction Design-Build Project provides downtown Winston-Salem with 1.2 miles of new roadway, addressing growing traffic demands in the area and creating a safer, longer-lasting roadway for the future.
Led by contractors Flatiron and Blythe Development Company (a joint venture), the new highway reopened nearly six months ahead of schedule. As the geotechnical engineer of record for the design team, led by HDR, Kleinfelder was an integral part of the contractor’s team and played a key role in ensuring the project was not slowed down by the extremely challenging geologic conditions and countless design constraints due to the project’s urban setting.
“The Business 40 project was complex and challenging and required tremendous effort and diligence from all involved to make it a success. The awards from DBIA Southeast and AASHTO are well deserved recognition for the entire project team and are testament to the power of collaboration and innovation that design-build delivers for transportation projects,” said Kleinfelder Project Manager Thomas Wells.
