George Karayiannis Joins Kleinfelder, Building on the Transportation Design Expertise of the San Diego Area

George Karayiannis, PE, has joined Kleinfelder’s San Diego team as a Senior Project Manager. With significant experience in the transportation industry, George will lead multidisciplinary engineering teams to deliver high-profile design and construction projects involving transportation infrastructure. As a primary point of contact for key clients, he will coordinate services and manage projects to ensure client needs are met through innovative solutions and sound recommendations. George will also play a key role in the area’s business development efforts.

“George’s technical and management experience combined with his thorough knowledge of the transportation industry make him a valuable partner to state and local agencies with infrastructure initiatives in the planning, design, or construction phase,” commented Western Region Transportation Design Manager Jim Frost. “We are excited to have him join our team, as he will prove to be an extremely valuable asset to our clients.”

An accomplished industry professional with over 20 years of experience, George has extensive experience delivering transportation projects from conceptual phase through completion. He is well versed in various delivery methods, including Design-Bid-Build and Construction Manager/General Contractor (CMCG), and has supported projects ranging from small roadway designs and bridge replacements to multimillion-dollar large-scale construction rail and transit projects.

Locally, George has recently supported San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) on the LOSSAN Corridor Capital Program and Critical Path projects, the El Portal Undercrossing project, and several double track projects including San Elijo Lagoon Double Track, San Dieguito Double Track, and Batiquitos to Shell Double Track. He has also provided project management and CMCG coordination for North County Transit District (NCTD) projects involving numerous at-grade crossings and the rehabilitation of Bridge 208.6 in San Clemente.

“Kleinfelder’s strong reputation within the transportation industry, both locally in San Diego and nationally, drew me to the firm,” George explained. “In addition to continuing to support major transportation agencies such as SANDAG and NCTD, Kleinfelder offers numerous opportunities to contribute to the firm’s strategic growth. I’m looking forward to helping Kleinfelder grow from a mid-size firm to large firm by diversifying our services for existing clients, while concurrently expanding into other geographic regions.”

Committed to advancing the transportation industry, George has served as a member of the San Diego Transportation Development Association (SDTDA), Women in Transportation Society (WTS), and the American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA).  George is a licensed professional engineer in California and Massachusetts, and he is a Qualified SWPPP Practitioner (QSP) and Qualified SWPPP Developer (QSD) in California.
