Influential Bridge Researcher Sami Megally Joins Kleinfelder

SAN DIEGO, California – Kleinfelder announced today that bridge expert and researcher Sami Megally, PhD, PE, SE, has joined the company as a principal professional.  Megally brings nearly 30-years of significant experience in the research, analysis and design of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures, cable stay structures and suspension structures to the role.

In his new position, Megally is a senior technical advisor for Kleinfelder’s large-scale bridge projects. He also joins Kleinfelder’s Bridge Service Line, which provides expert bridge engineering services across the United States on projects such as the award-winning North Torrey Pines Road Bridge Seismic Retrofit and Rehabilitation in Del Mar, California; the Norridgewock Covered Bridge Replacement in Norridgewock, Maine; and the I-25 over Ilex Street Design-Build project in Pueblo, Colorado. He is based out of the company’s global headquarters in San Diego, California.

“It is an honor to welcome Sami to Kleinfelder,” says Mark Creveling, Kleinfelder’s vice president of project management. “His diverse expertise in the research and design of complex bridges will greatly complement our existing expertise as we continue to grow our bridge design and engineering services nationally.”

Megally is an expert in seismic performance and serviceability of bridges, and has been the project manager, researcher and engineer on many high-profile projects including the Confederation Bridge in Canada, the Rion-Antirion Cable-Stayed Bridge in Greece and the new San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge in California. He is a voting member of the American Concrete Institute’s (ACI) Committee 421 (Reinforced Concrete Slabs) and the American Segmental Bridge Institute (ASBI) Concrete Practices Committee and has published over 40 papers in technical journals and conference proceedings. Specifically, Megally researched long- and short-term deformations of segmental bridges. The results, which identified that techniques used in bridge deformation modeling are accurate, were published in the Canadian Journal of Civil Engineering, an award winning publication. Most recently, Megally led the design of three pre-cast span-by-span, the independent check of two cantilevered bridges, and construction support analysis and load rating for eight segmental bridges for the $420M I-4/Lee Roy Selmon Crosstown Connector Interchange in Tampa, Florida.

Megally holds a Ph.D. in Civil and Structural Engineering from the University of Calgary and a Bachelors of Science in Civil and Structural Engineering from Ain-Shams University in Egypt. He is a registered Professional Engineer (PE) in California and Nevada, and a registered Structural Engineer (SE) in California.
