Kleinfelder Wins Project Management Institute’s 2014 Award for Project Excellence

SAN DIEGO, California – Kleinfelder is pleased to announce that it has received the Project Management Institute’s (PMI) coveted 2014 Award for Project Excellence at the for the successful, company-wide migration to the Deltek enterprise resource planning (ERP) system. The award was given to Kleinfelder for its innovative execution and successful implementation of the $3-million, 22-month project.

“Kleinfelder is a fast-growing, global engineering, architecture and science consulting firm which was quickly outgrowing the existing ERP system,” says Linda Lannen, Kleinfelder’s Chief Information Officer. “As a result of this implementation, Kleinfelder achieved its goal of having a single, central enterprise system for company financials, project management and reporting while realizing the benefits of improved operational efficiencies. Great project management was the key to our success, and we are honored to be recognized by PMI for our hard work.”

According to PMI, the Award for Project Excellence honors successful projects and project teams which exhibit superior project management performance. To be eligible for the award, projects must have budgets less than $100 million and could be any type, from any industry, in the public or private sector.

Kleinfelder’s ERP migration illustrates a growing trend in which top-performing engineering, architecture, and science consulting firms are focusing on lowering costs while improving overall operational efficiency.  The company embarked on the project in 2012, when company leadership realized the existing ERP system was no longer efficient.  The new system aimed to improve efficiencies and key processes, with the objective to launch the new system without business disruption.

“The value of strong project management was realized in two ways,” says Ellen Dailey, PMP, Kleinfelder’s IT PMO manager. “First, we enacted strategies to control positive outcomes by carefully managing risks, and dividing the project into smaller, valuable launches throughout the time line. Secondly, we created a unifying team culture grounded in our guiding principles and success factors. It was a tremendous team effort.  I am grateful to PMI for recognizing our project.”
