Kleinfelder provided several conceptual design options for a substation upgrade to support a large increase in power demand from a single customer. The scope included modifications at the existing 115 kV switchyard and the addition of a new substation with two redundant 62.5 MVA power transformers. Our scope also included the interconnecting 115 kV transmission line between the two stations. Kleinfelder evaluated the available options and performed a cost-benefit analysis, presenting options to the owner and customer.
Our client had to complete the project with minimal power outage and impact to existing customers, otherwise it could suffer significant loss of revenue. This required engineering construction sequencing—serving customer load from one side while working on the other, and then vice versa. Furthermore, the substation upgrade required efficient, cost-effective design.
Kleinfelder developed and presented three options to our client, each with cost estimates. Ultimately, the client requested that we present these options to its industrial customer and answer its any questions. We worked with the client and its customer to explain the pros and cons of each option, so the design would meet the customer’s specific needs.
Kleinfelder helped our client mitigate risk—and revenue loss—of power outage by optimizing engineering construction sequencing. Furthermore, we recommended using existing infrastructure where possible to reduce construction cost, thereby adding even greater value.
