Contracted by Wexpro Company, Kleinfelder performed annual reclamation assessment and monitoring for more than 800 facilities in existing oil fields throughout Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming. This three-year project would track success based on specific Bureau of Land Management (BLM) evaluation criteria and protocols.
The area’s varying geography and remote locations made identifying site locations a significant challenge. Kleinfelder’s geographic information systems (GIS) team needed to access spatial data from each state-specific Oil and Gas Conservation Commission’s online database in in order to build custom maps for safe navigation and efficient planning. Furthermore, all data collection and monitoring needed to be treated in compliance with the requirements set forth in related federal agencies’ management plan criteria.
After cross-referencing the study data with initial data provided by the operators, Kleinfelder’s GIS team developed custom field data collection Data Dictionary Files (DDFs) for documenting the current reclamation status for all locations of concern. The DDFs replaced use of paper data sheets, reducing time spent manually entering field data, increasing accuracy standards, and enabling easy data transfer for final deliverables—not to mention making streamlined adherence to regulation and compliance requirements easier cross-project.
After the completion of each year of time-lapse analyses, Kleinfelder delivered the final data in two customized database formats, as well as shapefiles, .KMZ files, and photologs. The personalized databases enabled operators to easily search and query for specific data, then access comprehensive information in an easy-to-read electronic form, providing a functional and invaluable investment for future years.
