The University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC) is the fourth-largest of the 17 campuses in the UNC system. This new $65 million, 196,000-square-foot facility will provide a central academic, professional, and social center for the campus’ more than 30,000 students and staff.
With $54 million allocated towards construction of this major building project, UNCC sought seamless, thorough construction materials testing and special inspection services to ensure every cent of this investment went towards efficiency and effectiveness. Since the project included everything from offices and meeting areas to major food service facilities to the University bookstore, services would need to meet the specific needs of a range of facility types.
Kleinfelder’s local team leveraged its global network to determine best practices for consolidating inspection services across the Student Union’s wide range of proposed services and facilities. The team’s quick, clear, and consistent communication made collaboration with construction stakeholders easy, enabling a strong structure and safe construction environment on the main building, as well as the Union’s unique features—a detached single-story regional utility plant with rooftop cooling towers, and an elevated structural steel pedestrian bridge.
