The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) sought to renovate its historic Quad Residence Hall—a $52.5 million, 225,000-square-foot project including seven four-level buildings. In addition to improving aesthetics and energy efficiency, renovations would ensure the building adhered to Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements.

Beyond Construction Services

The new buildings would include concrete slabs-on-grade and slabs-on-metal deck, as well as a wide range of other concrete and asphalt elements. The University sought Kleinfelder’s construction materials testing and special inspection expertise in overseeing the renovation. We also attending to important specific project details, including exterior building envelope repairs, energy-efficient windows, and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessibility improvements (including ramps and elevators), and protection of plant life throughout construction.

Renovating in a Rush

Adhering to UNCG’s desired specifications, Kleinfelder provided construction materials engineering and testing services for the quad’s extensive renovations, including utility relocations, new utilities, site retaining walls, hot-mix asphalt paving, and various ancillary site cast-in-place-concrete. To meet UNCG’s aggressive construction schedule, Kleinfelder provided staff from its Midwest region to assist during high-demand periods and shipped in special testing equipment from other offices to aid structural engineers in evaluating damaged materials onsite.

Project Results

Kleinfelder’s “one company” approach to project delivery enabled fast response in sharing materials and resources across the region, allowing the team to quickly respond to issues that arose during construction.
