As part of mitigation for the replacement of the nationally significant Waldo-Hancock suspension bridge, MaineDOT agreed to several appropriate mitigation tasks, including the development of a publication, the result of which is “Historic Bridges of Maine: 350 Years of Bridge and Roadway Design.”

Maintaining Budget and Schedule

Mitigation tasks for transportation projects have recently come under more intense financial scrutiny. Thus, preparation and finalization of the historic bridge book publication required efficient and concentrated efforts to maintain budget and schedule.

Providing a Complete Package

MaineDOT contracted with Kleinfelder to author and compile much of the publication’s content, complete its layout, coordinate with outside reviewers, and provide editorial assistance. We managed project meetings and followed up with project members and outside reviewers to ensure that the publication schedule was retained.

Project Results

“Historic Bridges of Maine” features in-depth chapters about Maine’s history of road and bridge building and historic bridge types, as well as a catalog of significant bridges organized by design. This unique mitigation task will contribute to the public’s understanding and appreciation of Maine’s historic bridges.
