To meet its growing need for aircraft refueling services, the New York Air National Guard (ANG) required additional storage and maintenance facilities for its KC-135 fleet. Kleinfelder provided complete design and construction administration services for a new KC-135 aircraft hangar and fueling facilities and renovation of two existing buildings.
Understanding the high energy demand of the typical KC-135 hangar and lifecycle facility operations costs prompted Kleinfelder to design this project with sustainability in mind. Kleinfelder explored alternative geometries that would minimize area and volume to provide energy savings during harsh winter weather and enhance the hangar’s usability. Unique needs for such facilities include an AFFF fire suppression system, specialized ventilation systems for work on interior bladders of aircraft, and point-of-use oxygen supply.
Kleinfelder partnered with the ANG and local staff during a design charrette process, interviewing facility end users and presenting design options to ensure the new design would enhance ANG’s operational mission while meeting the sustainability goals of the National Guard. In addition, two existing facilities were retrofitted for use as a maintenance shop and a combined wash bay, shop, and offices. This redesign minimized demolition and waste disposal and reduced construction costs by $500,000.
Kleinfelder’s design produced an energy-efficient, innovative facility that was completed on time and 15% below the government construction estimate.
