Kleinfelder provided design and construction administration services for a new sustainable Army Aviation Support Facility (AASF) for the New Hampshire Army National Guard (NHARNG). Construction of the taxi and runway areas was the largest project of its type in the State of New Hampshire.
The project required administrative offices, aviation operations, a hangar space for nine Blackhawk helicopters, and a variety of supports shows, as well as an integrated sustainable design compliant with EO 13123, to lower lifecycle energy and water usage intensity while meeting NFPA fire prevention and protection, and UFC ATFP requirements. To allow siting of the hangar and 13 more than acres of taxiways and runways, the civil design also would need to reduce stormwater impacts.
Kleinfelder designed an architecturally pleasing building meeting NHARNG mission goals, a functional structure, a low-impact stormwater management plan for 27 acres of paved runways, parking, and roof areas. Innovative use of bioswales, detention ponds, and permeable pavement minimizes stormwater runoff and treatment. The design minimizes lifecycle energy costs using insulated fabric doors in the hangar and providing natural light – reducing electricity needs by 15%.
Kleinfelder’s design yielded an attractive, energy-efficient facility, completed on time and approximately 10% below the government construction estimate. The new facility applies U.S. Department of Defense and UFC-compliant AT/FP measures with setbacks from all buildings and roads, blast resistant window glazing, robust site security barriers, and electronic detection and monitoring systems.
