In January of 2002, fire severly damaged the Rose Creek bridge, a ballasted deck timber trestle railroad structure that provides rail service to several carriers. Kleinfelder quickly mobilized and provided the project management, rehabilitation, design, and PS&E for a this 295-foot-long, 10-span precast/prestressed concrete box girder bridge.

A Quick and Effective Response

Within hours of the fire, Kleinfelder mobilzied its team of experts and conducted on-site observations. The structure was designed, bid, and constructed in eight months. The quick response, and expedited schedule, were instrumental in providing continued rail service through this vital corridor.

Keeping the Bridge Operational

Our team developed a strategy to strengthen the bridge which allowed passenger and freight service to continue while the permanent replacement was designed and constructed. We worked closely with the railroad staff, the contractor, and with the environmental staff to assure we had proper permitting, access, and staging throughout the construction process.

Project Results

Kleinfelder’s bridge design solution overcame all environmental constraints and maintained rail traffic throughout construction. The replacement bridge carries Coaster, Amtrak, and freight services across the environmentally sensitive Rose Creek. This bridge was selected as the “2002 Outstanding Project” by the San Diego Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
