Retaining Wall Design for Mixed-Use Development

  • Retaining Wall Design for Mixed-Use Development

The Crossings at Conestoga Creek is a mixed-use development of retail, hospitality, and high-end living space. The 90-acre plan includes 258 residential units, a 135-room hotel, and main street shopping destination, and the specialty grocery store Wegmans. Kleinfelder / Advantage Engineers was brought on by High Real Estate Group, LLC to assist with the development. One of the critical components Advantage designed and oversaw construction for were the retaining walls.

Early Collaboration

The series of large walls for the main entrance was particularly challenging. Two of the walls were located in the floodplain. The largest wall was not only confined for space, but would have curbs, guardrail, and fencing installed close to it. Kleinfelder / Advantage used a special, limited-footprint wall system that could accommodate all of the design constraints. Kleinfelder / Advantage Engineers began working with the site designers and construction managers at the beginning of the project. Our early collaboration allowed us to work through potential issues and develop a well-thought-out design. After the design was complete, our construction managers oversaw the wall construction to ensure compliance with the plans. Kleinfelder / Advantage’s team ownership of the entire retaining wall process made this part of construction extremely efficient.
