The Northampton Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) is an 8.65 MGD facility facing challenges to meet more stringent future permit requirements. The City engaged Kleinfelder to find ways to optimize existing operations and proactively plan to address future needs.

Looking Back to Plan Ahead

The City’s wastewater infrastructure had not been thoroughly evaluated or reassessed in some time. Parts of the system are more than 100 years old and well past useful life, resulting in reactive response to unplanned events. The City needed a Comprehensive Wastewater Management Plan to assess infrastructure needs for the next 20 years.

Interim Improvements

Kleinfelder provided interim plant improvements, including a bar rack replacement, supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system upgrades, and wet weather pump replacement, as well as planning and design. The team also provided construction administration services for a 2.3 MGD pre-cast concrete, factory-assembled pumping station to replace a station that had reached maximum capacity and was deteriorating due to age. The new pumping station increased hydraulic capacity to support planned expansion of the City’s industrial park.

Project Results

Kleinfelder’s efficient and timely interim improvements helped the facility bring its systems up to date. In addition, Kleinfelder is completing a two-year Comprehensive Wastewater Managment Plan assessing infrastructure needs for the next 20 years.
