Following successful completion of its Cherry Hospital project, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NC DHHS) awarded Kleinfelder the contract for construction materials testing and special inspections services for the new 470,000-square-foot Broughton Hospital. The Broughton Hospital is a new facility for providing help and support to those suffering from mental illness.
The previous campus, constructed between the late 1880s and early 1960s, had become obsolete and could not be adapted affordably to meet current codes and the needs of the NC DHHS. The NC DHHS sought Kleinfelder’s construction materials testing and special inspections assistance in updating the building to fit 382 beds for acute, geriatric, medical, adolescent, forensic, and long-term mental health patients.
In addition to patient care units, Kleinfelder provided support for the facilities classrooms, dining and recreation, areas, clinics, laboratories, and administrative offices. Additionally, Kleinfelder connected and organized communication between the three inspection firms and design team, building automatic workflows into the IT infrastructure to send out instant reports of structural deviations when they are noted within the site. Furthermore, reports are archived and accessible online for the design team throughout the project lifecycle, increasing work efficiency and saving the NC DHHS costs through speedier consultation.
In addition to providing construction materials testing and special inspections, Kleinfelder provides ongoing communication with various project stakeholders through the use of innovative technology and real-time tablet-based reporting to mitigate any potential structural deviations, ensure building compliance, and preserve the facility’s architectural center.
