As part of mitigation for adverse effects resulting from a transportation project, MaineDOT engaged Kleinfelder to complete the Lewiston Mills and Water Power System nomination to the National Register. The district encompassed Lewiston’s rich heritage related to the textile mill industry.

Layers of Historical Complexity

Nominating the Lewiston Mills and Water Power System Historic District proved challenging. The district covers approximately one square mile and consists of a dense composition of more than 150 resources. The district also represents one of the most significant historic textile industrial centers in New England. A previous consultant began the project several years ago, which added another layer of complexity.

Thorough Survey and Accurate Documentation

Kleinfelder completed a thorough and intensive survey of the historic district in order to accurately document each mill complex. In addition, we completed extensive research into the history of the historic district to capture its significant place within the New England textile industry.

Project Results

The nomination synthesized the historic district’s local and statewide significance and documented Lewiston’s prominent mill buildings and canal system, including the Albert Kahn-designed Bates Mill No. 5. Kleinfelder was also required to document a significant number of varied auxiliary resources that supported industry, such as social buildings, housing, and commercial ventures, as well as rail lines.
