The Green Line Extension project, an initiative of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), will greatly improve public transit service in some of the Commonwealth’s most densely-populated municipalities, as well as reduce automobile traffic, help combat greenhouse gas emissions, and support smart growth and urban redevelopment.
The extension adds approximately four miles of service and includes constructing seven stations, 25,000 feet of retaining wall, and 1.2 miles of new viaduct, as well as reconstructing eight bridges. Crossing three dense Massachusetts communities with a long history of industrial and commercial development, the project required excavating tens of thousands of cubic yards of potentially-contaminated soils. Community support of the project and design approval was critical to meeting the construction start date of fall 2012.
Kleinfelder mobilized a team of more than 50 professionals to provide a multidiscipline service approach, from program management through design and construction oversight. Kleinfelder’s communication with residents through workshops resulted in a MBTA-approved station design with a neighborhood-approved exterior face. Kleinfelder’s 3D model of the stations and rail corridor enabled residents to see the design, enhanced the design process, and helped avoid conflicts in project planning and execution. The Kleinfelder team will provide oversight of the construction management team throughout design and construction.
Kleinfelder’s proactive management approach has helped the MBTA keep the project on schedule while gaining community support and successfully maneuvering the project’s technical and logistical challenges.
