Massport owns and operates Logan International Airport and maritime facilities in the Port of Boston. Kleinfelder has been Massport’s prime consultant for their Resiliency Program since 2013, providing hazard modeling, vulnerability assessment, flood protection design and construction, emergency planning, flood forecasting, policy development, and communications services.
Kleinfelder prepared emergency flood operations plans for Logan Airport and maritime facilities in South Boston. Inter-departmental stakeholders were engaged to develop a robust, feasible plan to prepare for, respond to, and recover from a range of coastal flooding scenarios. A resiliency plan was also developed and includes prioritized projects, policies, and programs, to manage risk associated with coastal flooding and extreme rainfall. Kleinfelder developed concept-level resiliency strategies for vulnerable critical infrastructure, vetted strategies through stakeholder focus groups, and estimated costs. The Massport Floodproofing Design Guide was also created and is now used in all Massport design projects to ensure resiliency measures are incorporated.
Kleinfelder provided design, bidding, and construction phase services for flood protection retrofits of Massport’s most vulnerable critical assets. Kleinfelder helped Massport rapidly design and construct deployable flood barrier systems, flood doors and panels, equipment elevation, and emergency pumping systems. Kleinfelder participates in annual deployment exercises and provides after-action reports for continuous improvement.
“Resilience is a new field, and Kleinfelder is at the leading edge, helping Massport as it reaches its goal of becoming an innovative model for resiliency planning and implementation at port authorities nationwide.”
