To accommodate the growth of Massachusetts State Police troops at Logan Airport, which serves more than 15 million passengers and 12,000 staff annually, Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) selected Kleinfelder to perform architectural and engineering services for a new $12 million state-of-the art operational facility.

Balancing Budget, Schedule, & Operational Requirements

Diverse and complex operational needs had to be met within Massport’s budget and schedule parameters. Furthermore, the project had to comply with security and operations of the Transportation Safety Administration (TSA), located on the floor above the new police headquarters. Based on Kleinfelder’s recommendations, Massport decided to renovate an existing building versus construct a new one, saving cost and time while still meeting operational and aesthetic requirements.

A Long-Term, Sustainable Solution

Kleinfelder worked closely with Massport—from initial planning and site selection through design and construction management—to deliver a long-term, sustainable solution for present and future operations. Kleinfelder’s multi-disciplinary team successfully addressed numerous architectural, structural, mechanical, electrcical, operational, and security challenges associated with this complex, multi-phase project. The new facility, which consolidates several offices into a single location, includes a state-of the art dispatch center, an Emergency Operations Center, detention cells, and training and office space for the 200-person police force.

Project Results

Kleinfelder delivered an innovative, award-winning project that sets the standard for State Police facilities in Massachusetts and future renovation work at Logan Airport. The new facility, completed on time and on budget, enables the State Police to function more efficiently and continue to ensure safety at the 2,400-acre site.
