Kleinfelder helped Luminant Mining Company assess the structural integrity of its bridges and haul roads to determine if they could withstand the stress of new, heavier material haulers. Kleinfelder engaged structural engineers from Cambridge, Massachusetts, with the Texas-based delivery team to successfully execute the project. Following field observations and review and analysis of designs, Kleinfelder delivered quality findings and recommendations in less than 12 weeks, enabling Luminant to choose the most efficient, cost-effective option to address increased hauler loads.

Meeting a Critical Deadline

Timing was critical because the client needed the assignment completed in less than 12 weeks. This included assessment of conditions and upgrade options with respective opinions of probable costs that would allow Luminant to choose the most efficient option.

Recommendations that Lead to Effective Decisions

The main recommendations included upgrading the deck and steel girders at the blending facility building in order to carry the wider and heavier new haulers. At the South crusher building, options for upgrades or replacement were presented, as well as options to repair slopes and abutments. The production of two reports by the Kleinfelder team enabled the client to weigh all options and make effective decisions.

Project Results

The Kleinfelder team, a cooperative effort among nationwide offices, delivered the reports in eight weeks—four weeks ahead of the projected 12-week period. The efficiency and speed of the team effort has drawn praise from the client.
