Kleinfelder developed a comprehensive Integrated Solid Waste Management Plan (ISWMP) for Luke Air Force Base (AFB), to maximize the amount of diverted solid waste that is reused or recycled as part of its sustainability program.

Maximize Recycling and Re-use

A requirement of every Air Force installation is to maximize the quantity of solid waste diverted from the landfill to recycling or re-use. To accomplish this, the U.S. Air Force requires each base to develop an ISWMP.

Improved Accounty and Reporting

In addition to the ISWMP, Kleinfelder developed better accounting and reporting mechanisms for the recyclable materials generated at the base that was included into their environmental management system and pollution prevention program. The Plan also identifies new waste streams for recycling that could be easily added to the suite of materials diverted from the landfill.

Improved Accounting and Reporting

The Kleinfelder Plan determined that, through better tracking and reporting of the waste streams it recycled, Luke could divert 38% of its total solid waste from the landfill—exceeding the client’s objective of 30%. If all of the new recycling opportunities identified in the Plan are implemented, the amount of solid waste diverted from the landfill could easily exceed 50%.
