The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) sought to create a new connector that would allow for continuous, post-security access to Gates 37 and 38 from the existing food court and remainder of Logan Airport’s Terminal B. The design of the new connector, hold room, and gates took inspiration from the world-renowned rowing race – The Head of the Charles Regatta®.
The project area was required to be operational, with at least one gate remaining active throughout construction. Kleinfelder, along with the construction manager, worked closely to identify multiple construction phases to allow for continued operation while minimizing the impact on passengers, airlines and Massport. To provide a unique travel experience, Kleinfelder and Massport devised the concept of the Head of the Charles Regatta® as inspiration for the new public spaces. References to the Regatta can be found in the terrazzo floor which depicts a winding river, the infographic displays along the walls of the connector, and two rowing boats (donated by Elite Rowing Inc. & Filippi Boats and Community Rowing, Inc.) mounted onto the ceiling.
Lean principles adopted throughout the project helped streamline the design milestones through multiple delivery packages based on the anticipated construction phases. The project, which was designed to meet Massport’s sustainability objectives, earned LEED Gold Certification for Commercial Interiors. Among the sustainable achievements, the project reduced lighting power consumption by 52% and water usage by 28%. Additionally, 23% of the materials used in the project contained recycled content.
Through a highly collaborative effort, the project achieved its goals of providing a space that enhanced the user experience, improved the client’s operations and met the required sustainability goals, achieving LEED GOLD Certification. In addition, due to effective project phasing and coordination by Kleinfelder, the construction had minimal impact to airport operations and passenger travel.
