The Horseshoe Project is a huge refurbishment and expansion design-build project that will improve mobility along I-30 and I-35E—near the Central Business District in downtown Dallas—in an efficient and environmentally sensitive manner. The Kleinfelder design-build team conducted geotechnical field investigation and design services for bridge foundations, walls, and other structures.
The high traffic congestion in the area posed safety concerns for the construction and engineering teams, as well as the commuting public. There were various challenges to this project, including managing ongoing vehicular traffic, which resulted in evaluation of multiple scenarios for the construction of the walls and bridges.
In addition to testing and design services, Kleinfelder conducted the actual geotechnical field drilling, inspection, and testing to determine the right materials for the design of the bridge foundations. The team developed good working relationships with the partners to ensure that delivery expectations were met and the project proceeded according to schedule. The team also provided the design for the bridge foundations, walls, and wall ground improvements for I-35, as well as roadway design and pavement design recommendations.
Organized tracking and an effective design-build process, in tandem with making innovative development decisions and reducing excess geotechnical work, helped keep this massive project three months ahead of schedule and under-budget—returning $200,000 to the client in design costs.
