Building on a longstanding relationship with this global leader in education, Harvard Business School (HBS) selected Kleinfelder to provide comprehensive architecture and engineering services for an $11 million addition and renovation on the beautiful and rapidly expanding HBS campus.

Concurrent Construction Challenges

The newly updated HBS Executive Education Center demanded compatibility with Harvard’s historic context. In addition, the project’s design and construction occurred simultaneously with Kleinfelder’s design for an expanded subterranean pedestrian tunnel system to connect several existing and new buildings. Kleinfelder needed to take these concurrent challenges into account, and integrate them seamlessly into planning, full design, and construction administration.

Time-Saving Ideas

After carefully coordinating planning and construction schedules—and integrating them into final design—the Kleinfelder team developed ways to prioritize critical project steps, and in so doing was able to “jump start” the construction of several large buildings well before design had been completed. The team also developed a materials management plan for the entire campus, providing HBS with a roadmap to enhance their service system throughout the campus.

Project Results

By helping HBS save time and money on this renovation and expansion project, Kleinfelder enabled the university to have full use of the building for the new academic year. Kleinfelder’s commitment to design excellence and cost-effective solutions helps Kleinfelder maintain its reputation as a leader in providing higher education design services.
