This addition at Grossmont Hospital is a state-of-the-art, seven-story, 160,000-square-foot facility, which includes an emergency department, six critical care units, and two floors of progressive care units. Kleinfelder provided the structural design for this $56 million, steel ductile moment-frame structure, including a penthouse and basement.
Our client required a building that was versatile in its floor plan so that future improvements and adjustments to the interior could be made to meet growing patient demand. This was accomplished by locating mechanical ductwork in exterior enclosures, as well as making the structural system a moment-framed system. Additionally, the new structure was built in the heart of Sharp’s Grossmont Healthcare campus in La Mesa. The tight site conditions required the new structure to seamlessly integrate with existing facilities—some of which were constructed in the 1950s.
The project replaced functions in the existing facility, while providing space for new services and meeting seismic requirements. All treatment and inpatient rooms are zoned for patient, doctor, nurse, and family areas. Each zone is equipped to facilitate the prime occupant. The structural design is in compliance with all Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development requirements. The floors are framed with concrete over composite metal deck, and the structure is designed with Zone 4 and site-specific response spectra dynamic analysis.
The Kleinfelder design team worked closely with the client and contractor to minimize unexpected delays, addressing conflicts as soon as they arose. The cooperation among the project team and other stakeholders was reflected in the synergy found between the new and existing structures.
